Speed Hillclimbs

Speed Hillclimbing has been part of British motorsport since the early days, and many famous drivers, including Sir Stirling Moss, developed their skills on the hills. It involves driving quickly up a narrow asphalt hillside course, often little wider than the car itself! As in sprinting, competitors take it in turns to set a time, with the results determined by the fastest times. You are given practice runs before the competition proper starts, then you will be allowed two runs against the clock. Only your best time counts in the final results, so that if you get your first run wrong you get a second chance. Entry is open to a wide range of cars from Production Road Cars and Kit Cars through to Radicals and Single Seat Racing cars.

To take part you will need a crash helmet, fireproof overalls, gloves and boots. You must also have an Interclub Competition Licence, but there is no qualifying test required – just a fee to pay! Full details of all these requirements are in the MSA Competitors’ Yearbook (the ‘Blue Book’). Although many events, including ours, are qualifying rounds of regional championships, you can just as easily enter as a one-off without having to commit to a championship.

We have a long association with Wiscombe Park, the hillclimb venue situated between Honiton and Seaton in East Devon. Each year in September we co-promote with other South-West clubs the ‘Five-Clubs’ meeting – a weekend of speed hillclimbing.
