Throwback, er, Tuesday: New Hillclimb Venue!

On this day in 1961, we announced a new hillclimb venue at Dyrham Park, in association with the National Trust.  That’s right, we ran hillclimbs up the driveway from the stately home that we resurfaced in 1961 at a cost of £1200.  If only tarmac was that cheap today!

Our chairman at the time, Chris Bigwood, announced the news to the press.  We ran hillclimbs there for many years with the British Hillclimb Championship concluding at the venue for several years.  These days, we run the Five Clubs Hillclimb at Wiscombe Park Hillclimb near Honiton.  Wouldn’t it be great to go back to Dyrham Park?  Last time we were there for our centenary celebrations in 2011, the event was so popular that traffic backed up onto the M4 motorway and we had to close the gates.  Luckily, it was all recorded by 1st Take and recorded for posterity on DVD.
